Metacontrol was established in Palermo in 1985 and comprises a group of engineers and technicians who are experts in non-destructive controls, i.e. control methods able to detect defects in materials without altering the physical, chemical and dimensional characteristics of the components examined. The defects are those of internal or surface discontinuities of various types and forms that decrease the integrity of the material, sometimes with dramatic consequences; some of them are a result of processes the materials undergo before or during assembly, whereas others are generated during work due to fatigue, corrosion, overloading or structural failure. The main control methods are magnetic, ultrasound and X-ray.
